  1. Marcia Miller

Bravissima to Patricia Grossman for creating such realistic, passionate, and memorable characters in this radiant novel of family, assimilation, love, loss, mental illness, friendship, and the inner drives that keep people going despite setbacks and disappointments Grossman s observations of bipolar illness ring heartbreakingly true, as does the fierce love of a mother for her gifted daughter whose decline is painful but compelling to read Highly recommended.

  2. Melanie

This novel spotlights a mentally ill character who is also multi talented and, in the end, a consummate survivor Yet her suffering is authentic and sympathetically evoked The angle with the mother, which I won t give away, is particularly interesting.

  3. Anicka Vavra

I m in a book club with other Czech Americans We all really liked this book. The main character Elisa s situation is harrowing but she is brilliantly resourceful. The way her Czech background is described resonated for a lot of us.

  4. Sammy

Amazing book Shows how two souls can get dangerously entwined when a loved onetries to help someone with true mental illness Not for the faint of heart, but gripping, entirely realistic, and a story that, however tentatively, finally points the way toredemption.

  5. Alison

The novel was a definitely depressing but the characters and their lives were well drawn It is a in depth look at a the family dynamics of Eastern European immigrants and their first generation children It is also a realistic portrayal of the daughters mental illness throughout her lifetime.

  6. Kathleen

A disturbing accurate portrayal of the pain and anquish of a manic depressive daughter, her mother and others.

  7. Darcy

Very rich reading experience Author weaves the mental illness and child of immigrants themes together beautifully Ending hits just the right note.

  8. Lindy

A hard read about a manic depressive daughter told through the people surrounding her I thought the author did a great job giving a realistic view into this awful mental illness.
