I thought this book was fantastic A really good life story and an excellent account of mountain rescue I ve helped on a rescue and seen many but never been in need of one But I ve always known they were there if needed I ve much respect for all those who dedicate their lives to helping other climbers The yellow helicopters around the hills are a very reassuring sight They will be missed.

Last week HMS Gannet, air sea rescue helicopter, retired and bid farewell to the Scottish mountain ranges This event coincided with me reading this book and brought it home to me what a valuable resource this is to the many volunteer mountain rescue teams Cairngorm John is a fascinating book It is very sad at times, when dealing with the lose of life It s often filled with laughter and great stories, but most of all it tells of the dedication and camaraderie of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team It [...]

A good mountaineering book A vivid and detailed account of John Allen s involvement with the Cairngorm mountain rescue team He takes you through he s early interest in the mountains, and how he first got interested and participated in the team He then details the rescues and major events in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s with detail and personal anecdote It was very interesting to read the impact technology had on mountain rescue, both the good and bad The book is full of good advice for hill walkin [...]

It took me a while to get on board with this I like memoir books but getting through the early part with life history can be difficult This one wasn t too lengthy but there was a tone in there that I couldn t put my finger on Reinforcing that his children had been brought up right, and that the new digital age isn t necessarily a good thing didn t sit right with me.Nevertheless, I m really glad I continued as once he joined the rescue service it was hugely informative, entertaining and moving I [...]

Good account of a career mountain rescue leader, Cairngorm john being his radio call sign He skips over the autobiography quickly and recounts re a number of dramatic or not I incidents in clear crisp prose that sounds like he s talking in the room He doesn t embellish the drama in any rescues, if anything playing it down He also writes a number of almost essays on relevant topics, from reviving frozen climbers to his persuasive case against a privatised mountain rescue increases risk, if people [...]

Very worthy.Don t get me wrong, I have the utmost admiration for mountain rescue, and for the author, they do an amazing job The book was hard going though, and gave me nightmares about my husband and daughter s ascent of The Old Man of Coniston, where they got rained on heavily I could hear CJ s voice telling me they were underprepared for bad weather and my H slipped on some wet, loose rock I m now not sure whether I want to risk taking her up Sleive Donard So, basically this book made me want [...]

Gripping and informative Plenty of advice and discussion about the lessons to be learned written in a calm, authoritative and modest style I m sold on the idea of spending some time walking in the Cairngorms before long And I like the final paragraph Beyond our skills and strength, expertise and experience, we must accept the world as it is, including change however tragic All we can do is mind how we go on the earth and look after each other and, if we cannot turn sadness into joy, or death bac [...]

Will be of interest to anyone who likes to spend time in the British mountains, especially if you know the Cairngorms Stories of individual rescues are interspersed with an informative behind the scenes account of how Mountain Rescue works in Scotland and what it takes to get a successful team on the hills May even inspire you to put a few into the collection box on the bar.
