This book has a very Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman feel to it.Except of course, she isn t a doctor but a teacher DFor the most part of the book, I kept forgetting it s actually a contemporary I can t explain it, it s just the feel of it How they all behave, the story, Indian in the mountain and spinster teacher in small town fall in love, while the town hates him, plus being his cottage in the mountains, training horses and just everything D I saw cars being mentioned and that made me remember it s s [...]

Opening Line He needed a woman Bad I had a ton of problems with this book and I m finding it really difficult to review because as much as this story confused me, annoyed me and downright offended me, in the end as much as I wanted to I just didn t hate it I did however breathe a sigh of relief when I finished.Written in 1989 Mackenzie s Mountain is a contemporary romance however it reads, and for the first 100 pages I thought it was a historical, taking place around 1890 1910 It takes place in [...]

This is in my top ten books of all time I love Wolf and Mary They are one of my romance supercouples This is a book to read when you are feeling jaded about romance novels When I read it the first time, I immediately turned around and reread it I still have my first copy but I bought another copy since the first one is a little worn.

This is my favorite contemporary romance I love the Wolf and Mary s story, they are two great characters Mary Elizabeth Potter is a transplanted southern teacher who is trying to find a exciting life in Wyoming Mary meets half breed rancher Wolf when she goes to his house to find out why his son Joe quit school Sparks fly between Wolf and Mary right away but Wolf pushes her away because he is resented in town after going to jail for a rape he didn t commit, so he does not want to risk her reput [...]

Warning This is a rage review It will be inappropriate and expletive ridden Proceed with fucking cautionSoundtrack for this review Gregorian Monks chanting What the actual fuck over and overThis book was so backwards and ridiculous, I wish I had never wasted money on it Because that s what it was It was an absolute waste and completely offensive and racist Half of this book is about discrimination against Native Americans but the author does nothing except make it worse by describing the only 2 [...]

I read this book in one sitting which means I stayed up all night so I m a little delirious right now I won t write a review you can thank me for that but I would like to say a few things while I am still living in the moment of Mackenzie s Mountain.First of all, if you haven t read this book, you really need to get that taken care of Within 10 years it will be proclaimed a classic you ll be shelving it right up there with Catcher In the Rye The Grapes of Wrath and you will want to be in the kno [...]

Obsessions were funny things unhealthy ones could ruin lives, but some obsessions lifted people to higher planes of life, made them shine with a brighter light, burn with a hotter fire, and if those obsessions weren t fed, then the person withered, a life blighted by starvation of the soul Classic Linda Howard at her best He had learned to use iron control when dealing with Anglos, but something about this prim little woman got under his skin.Wolf Mackenzie is an Indian and an ex con who went to [...]

Does anyone else find it hard to assess a book when the thing is completely out of date I felt like I d stepped back in time a few decades, when most small towns were suspicious of anyone who looked different from whatever they were used to in their small little bubble Of course, there are still remote places of small town Americana that are like this, but not on the same saturated level that there was back then And by that level I mean OMG, LOCK THE DOORS, the Native American Indian man is comi [...]

3.5 starsI wish I had read this about 10 20yrs ago, I think then I would have loved it as much as others do There are a couple older books hello, purple prose that are very close to my heart that others read for the first time in this day and age and they don t find it as great as me I think this may be the case with this book and me, I liked it but cringed at some parts One person s sentimentalism is another person s expiration date Our main couple, Mary and Wolf, had an incredibly sweet relati [...]

3,5 estrellitas.

Very hard to rate this book because, while I loved the main characters, and even the hokey yet sweet nature of their love story, I abhorred the very dated, racistish and prejudiced plot, and its predictability. The book was written in the late eighties but the attitudes in it could have well been plucked out from a century before Terms like half breed, dirty Indian whore, etc made me cringe, as did h s fetishization of the H as a big, bad, dark savage in a loincloth I decided to give the author t [...]

Audio update I recently bought the abridged audio version, narrated by Nanette Savard Didn t like her voice Sharp, angry, and biting too much of the time The abridged version leaves out far too many important scenes, including the epilogue Half the book is missing Not recommended Wish they would produce an unabridged version But the story and the series is good See original book review below Content Several explicit sex scenes, assorted violence, some cussing but schoolmarm Mary soon puts a stop [...]

I have to say I had some trepidations when I started this book I like contemporary romances but my favorite is historical It was also a very short 250 something pages I tend to like my books longer than that since I can fly through books at lightening speed But it had a cute premise and tons of good reviews so I gave it a shot I felt like I went Awwwwwwwwwwww throughout almost the whole book It s definitely one of those warm and fuzzy kind of romances but the love scenes definitely turned up the [...]

3.5 stars This was my first Linda Howard read Yes I know, I must have been living under a rock Anyway, I do not think reading this 20 years after it was written would change anything I am not a fan of historical romance and I would not classify this as that But the author really had no idea what century the characters were living in A petticoat really Seriously Indians and Anglos Come on I remember the 1980s very clearly While there was and still is discrimination, people did not talk like this [...]

AudibleOh, the bullshit. The old school, overly dramatic, racist bullshit. How many times was the word savage used, for starters The narration was exaggerated as well.UghEveryone loves but me.

This is an old category romance that I read way back when I m not usually a re reader but I stumbled across this in unabridged audio format and figured what the heck I listen to audio s when I m doing tedious tasks like driving, cleaning the yard of dog poo or scrubbing the bathroom There s not much to lose on my end and I ll usually finish everything I start on audio, excepting The Ill Made Mute which was one of the few too torturous for even me to finish Mackenzie s Mountain was a much better [...]

  20. Lea"s Audiobooks Hensley

Narrated by Christina Traister A favorite Howard from 1989 for many a romance fan, Mackenzie s Mountain certainly has what I would call an old school feel to it I m afraid the romance elements filling this book, while popular in 1989, may seem clich d today to the first time reader But for me, Mackenzie s Mountain represents my first days of reading romance and I remember it with great fondness The big solitary half breed by the name of Wolf who lives on his mountain and is rejected by the local [...]

Dear Friends,I have to inform you that this is the first book that I ve read of Linda Howard, and I was not disappointed. My point is that Ms Howard is a wonderful storyteller, combining her characters with an ingenious plot Like I saidwonderful. The story of the book resumes itself by saying thatWhen Mary Elizabeth Potter the local teacher, confronts Wolf Mackenzie to get his son back in school, she cames face to face with a bitter and dangerous man But with this also comes his very good looks an [...]

3.25 5 3stars BI read this story several years ago and recently saw my library has it on MP3 so I thought I d listen The narrator, Christina Traister, was excellent and smoothly moved between the male and female voices.I know this book is much beloved by romance fans and I enjoyed it quite a bit but not as much as I remember My favorite parts were the relationship between Wolf and his son Joe, as well as many glimpses of Mary s fierce character The love story between Mary and Wolf was pretty swe [...]

Finally an epilogue I have been banging on about the lack of epilogue at the end of LH s books and with this I finally got one I know that the only reason Ms Howard included it was because there is such a huge time difference between this and the second story and she was just making the transition from this to Mackenzie s Mission easier, but I really don t care, I got to see a bit of the HEA I have so craved with her stories.

  28. Elizabeth (Liz)

The Mackenzies series is one of her very best This is the book that drew me to Linda Howard Unfortunately, when she went to hardback aside from the first few , something was lost I guess she was trying to go mainstream or something I m a fan of her early work, the books in the true romance genre If suspense is your thing, you might prefer the books she s released in hardcover.
