I don t know I just didn t find anything new here which is fine, because even books with cliches I can love But I didn t FEEL anything for these characters or the story in itself The writing is great, but I guess I was expecting from that cover This is another book I have read recently that just feels too long and seems to drag If it had been a little shorter, some of the unnecessary descriptions could have been cut I think if you haven t read a ton of fantasy books, you will probably love this [...]

Badass female Who saves the Prince And who doesn t need a prince to save her I m sold I really hope to love this book It seems promising I m very excited like always when it comes to books.

Out here, darkness meant death I have two incredibly shallow reasons for picking up this book I thought the cover was gorgeous it s a bit spooky but gilded at the same time and I really love ampersands Thankfully, Onyx Ivory delivered beyond a pretty cover We follow disgraced outcast Kate Brighton as she is brought back to palace life after she saves prince Corwin Tormaine from the deadly nightdrakes, which have somehow begun to attack during the day, by using her forbidden wilder magic But Kate [...]

Every time the book had Traitor Kate especially when it was trying to be dramatic , all I could think of was Trader Joe s Maybe I m just hungry The thing with the fantasy genre is that it s hard to make a plot that has been written millions of times before unique Onyx and Ivory has great writing, pretty swell characters, and a decent setting, but its major drawback was how predictable the plot was It follows many traits of the numerous fantasies I ve read before, and because of that I wasn t qui [...]

Putting this down for now The premise reads SO familiar Plus I think the book description is very confusing, which already put me off before I opened the book Will try again later.

I want to say first that I am a huge huge fan of Mindee Arnett Loved her Nightmare series as well as her Avalon Polaris series, they were seriously on point I was super excited about this fantasy, but I found myself feeling like it was just too long for what it was I loved the horse aspect and Kate s powers, and the characters have a lot of potential but the story dragged for me I think there is a lot of setup for what is to come, and so I think maybe the second book is where the action and push [...]

I received an e ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review Review can be found on Milky Way of Books A high stakes fantasy with magic, some kind of mutant bad dragons and forbidden romance I enjoyed the book with its rich world building and well developed characters And there are horses So many horses in this book Kate and Corwin had a lot to go through in this book and while some tropes were too familiar to me I enjoyed the action and the details Mindee Arnett gave to her plot and soci [...]

What a fabulous high fantasy full of intrigue, secrets, and lies The concept was awesome There were magists that controlled enforced magic and made spells, yet wilder magic was outlawed and punishable by death view spoiler And how very interesting that the mage s magic was actually wilder magic The very thing they fought so hard against hide spoiler I freaking LOVED the drakes And Kate s ability to control and speak to animals Those were my absolute favorite parts As soon as the nightdrakes were [...]

This book was all kinds of amazing, just as I had hoped it would be The writing was gorgeous, and easy to get lost in this story The characters were all awesome to read about and get to know And I very much enjoyed reading about this stunning world that Mindee created It was a bit scary yet all kinds of awesome too.I m giving this book four stars, because while most of was pretty perfect and fun, there was a few small things that made my heart hurt a little Ack But I found this book so be awesom [...]

I received an egalley of this title via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review Thank you publisher 4 out of 5 starsI really enjoyed Onyx Ivory it is a book of slow burning passion and fast paced adventure Kate, our main female character, is in exile after her father attempted to kill a high king Corwin, our main male character, is a disgraced prince, returning to his kingdom Their lands are plagues by giant man eating lizards, and it is when Kate saves Corwin s life does our story really beg [...]

Thanks to the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review This doesn t in any way influence my opinion on it.I ve wanted to read Onyx Ivory for quite a while now and I was not at all disappointed with what I read I love YA Fantasy, really I hardly read anything else so I have read just about every idea there is, but I am always impressed when I read books like this one that have a familiar feel to it yet many original and ingenious twists and turns that keeps it fresh I appla [...]

This had me at by Mindee Arnett but Pitch Black meets the Pony Express Sounds like the premise of Tegami Bachi Sold.

Everyone calls her Traitor Kate after her father tried to murder the high king years ago Now Kate works for the Relay, a band of the fastest horse riders, best bowman, to carry out imperial court messages They need to be the fastest to out run the dark For when night rises, so do the nightdrakes dragons ranging in sizes up to elephants Luckily for Kate, she holds a secret She is a wilder, born with the power to influence animals, speaking to their minds However, wilders are killed, known to have [...]

Every time I read a new Mindee Arnett series, I feel like it hooks me even quickly than the last did The synopsis of this one sounded really interesting, maybe a little similar to other fantasy novels, but I was confident Mindee Arnett would put a spin on it that would make me love it And I did The history, the world building, and the characters were than enough to make up for the tropes used and I found myself getting sucked deeper and deeper into the story the I read, which was exactly what [...]

Actual rating 3.5 starsMany thanks to Harper Collins Publishers and Edelweiss for providing me with a free eARC for review All opinions are my own. This was a solid, OK fantasy story, but compared to some of the other knockouts I ve read recently, it didn t measure up There was a great deal of story line that was merely told to the reader instead of shown in character interactions or by thoughts While the chapters switched points of view, it was still third person and this omniscient narrator mer [...]

  17. Kate

I received this ARC from Edelweiss.Kate Brighton has a secret No, it s not that her father tried to murder the king everyone knows that, hence her nickname Traitor Kate Her secret is that she s a wilder, able to use magic to influence the minds of horses, which comes in handy in her job as a Relay rider Only mages are legally allowed to use magic, and wilders are captured and killed or exiled by the Inquisition And mages are the ones who keep the cities safe from the nightdrakes that attack anyo [...]

2.5 stars With the growing popularity of the fantasy genre authors need to really go the extra mile in order to set their book apart from the rest whether that s with strong characters to cover a plot we ve seen before, or an exciting new element that adds something to the formula that forces you to remember it long after you re finished and unfortunately this book had none of those things Onyx and Ivory is a story told by our two main leads the traitor s daughter Kate and the crowned Prince Cor [...]

3.5 stars for Onyx and IvoryI enjoyed book one of Mindee Arnett s new Rime Chronicles Our protagonist is a strong willed, mail carrier named Kate Brighton Exiled from the gentry due to her father s attempted murder of the High Lord, Kate rides across the country to try to escape from her past Her world, however, is plagued by dragons lizards who attack at night called the nightdrakes this reminded me A LOT of The Demon Cycle but a little tame.Kate dwells on the mystery or reason behind her fath [...]

As someone before me has pointed out the cover is beautiful, but I won t judge a book by its cover and since the expected release is somewhere in the future of 2018 the blurb is all I have to go on.Judging by the blurb only, I get a Fire changeling book 2 vibe like there seems to be some ish common factors father accused of murdering the king daughter with the power commanding others minds although Kates power seems to be limited to animals only Is there a fancy word for it , like telekinesis an [...]

  21. Teresa

This is a fantastic start to a new series maybe duology and I can t wait to see what will happen in this story Kate is deemed a traitor her father tried to kill the king, he failed but was executed and his only child was thrown out and forgotten by the royal family Kate has found a place for herself as a messenger throughout the realms but soon her past will come back and she will have to make a decision of where her loyalties lie and where her heart leads her Did I mention that magic exists in [...]

  22. USOM

This was like a 3.5 for me Don t get me wrong, I really liked many aspects, but it was one of those books where I can see the sequel getting way better There was a lot of time put into establishing the world and the characters and what made them tick, but my most memorable characters were the side ones Additionally, this seemed really plot driven, and there s nothing wrong with it, but in the next book it seems that there could be character development now and that s what I m waiting for That [...]

  23. Ashley

Fun story I loved the whole kingdom aspect and fighting for the throne And of course all the animals I liked Corwin and Kate s relationship It was definitely complicated because Corwin was prince of a kingdom that outlawed wilders, and Kate secretly was a wilder. This book definitely sets up the series and I think the next book will have higher stakes.I knocked off a star because Onyx and Ivory did feel kind of long Although I enjoyed it, I was also ready for it to end.

  24. Ellyn

This one took a while for me to really get into Arnett does a great job with the world building, but Kate and Corwin fell a little flat for the first half of the book The do eventually become dynamic in the second half of the book The concept doesn t feel too different from many other YA novels, but that said, I enjoyed the writing, and will read the second book when it comes out.
