A textbook from college, this book put into perspective some of the radical views of King that is frequently, and unfortunately forgotten about Along with his work on race, we mustn t forget his message on war, wealth, and the poor Didn t President Reagan sign a bill authorizing a national holiday honoring this teacher of nonviolence shortly after the president had sent the comrades of the singers and musicians to carry out an armed attack on Grenada, one of the smallest countries in the world [...]

wonderfully argues against the simplistic message that MLK s work has been reduced to instead unearths the truly radical, profoundly relevant man and mission that continues to resonate MLK was than little black boys and girls holding hands with little white boys and girls, and Vincent Harding illuminates that MLK s focus was far broader in it s scope Harding argues that MLK was focused on combatting racism, militarism, and consumerism and that since a bullet silenced him forever others have co [...]

Written by a confidante of Martin Luther King, this book paints a fuller picture of one of our world s most important people. An informative, poetic read about the the transition of MLK after his I Have A Dream speech. Many of us have been content to leave MLK in that setting and why not He was inspiring a nation to become , in an historic way That speech will never lose its impact or importance Yet there was is much to the MLK story.Racism, militarism and materialism were the enemy and as King b [...]

This is a great book I didn t know how Luther could have such a profound influence on me though I had heard of him His fight against Militarism, Materialism and Racism is a good course to uphold and Harding has done a great job in bringing this into the limelight However compressed the book is, it was the interlaced poetry and vivid imagery that saves the book from boredom and that is what makes this book stand out from the many others.

This book was the fortification I needed on Dr King s weekend in 2017 Even though Prof Harding wrote these essays in the 1980s, his warnings of how the memory of Dr King would be co opted and falsified in the service of militarism, capitalism, and racism are all too real It s powerful to read those words from someone who was a friend to Martin, as well as an eminent historian and a truly gifted speechwriter.

interesting look at the way King is viewed today as a hero We forget or ignore the More radical aspects of his teachings and opposition to those ideas at the time As a colection of essays written through the years many ideas are repeated.
